I am an Ant

You know those moments when you're walking down a corridoor and as you pass "unnamed characters in your life posing as colleagues you never thought of saying hi to", you wonder what's happening with their lives and realise that in the play called "Their Life", you are that "unnamed character posing as a colleague they never thought of saying hi to"?

Some of us think the world of ourselves. We think it so much that it sometimes shows in the things we say or how we treat others. We think we're so special that nothing that we see or hear has a firm bearing on how we see our destiny.

The best among us will probably just think it.

The rape, murder and mayhem we read in the papers will never happen to us. The relationship breakdowns that our mothers warned us about will never happen to us. The financial entanglements of others will not be our fate. Nor will many other heartaches, pitfalls and tragedies that are chronicled in abundance in the libraries of human history.

It will never happen to us.

We are special.

Till the point where we hit a calamity of our own making. Trodding on this path called life without heeding the resonant echoes of our elders, our ancestors, or the stage of our own little play, as I have learned, is a recipe for disaster. It's the quickest way to realise that we are not so special. We are like billions of others in this world.

Small. Fallible. Insignificant.

Human failings: forgetfulness and arrogance. We forget history and if we do remember, we're too arrogant to think it can happen to us.

Just look at the roads, people driving cars and ridings bikes like they're invincible.

Being an ant is good, at least they work together and someone to look up to. I always feel like an average cockroach, about to be crushed at anytime by anything. Wonder how many people think this way.

Najah,
Most people think that they are special. In fact, we are ordinary mortals being placed on this planet earth for just s short time. The reality is we are nothing!

My personal friend who was a senior engineer at IWK passed away last year.He was 54 years old and also an imam at my surau- a very devout muslim.I went to funeral and a lot of friends came to visit him. A few of us shed our tears:-(

Now, no one talked to me about him.Only his family members and few friends remember him...like goes on...

Finally, we are all nothing as far as this world is concerned. My time will come ..and I must get ready. How many of us are ready? I think none of us,including me!
