My Politics

There's so much being said about elections by all sides that I've turned my TV to mute and [POLITIC_FILTER="on"]

Everyone has something to say about the state of the country. Some of it is bad - perhaps to blame the other side. The bits that are good are inserted to attribute credit to certain parties. And then there are bits that are good that are made to sound bad.

We Malaysians are a critical lot - we have something to say about everything. But I'm with Ash all the way on this - a vote is secret, and personal, I might add.

At the end of the day, we're all still Malaysians.

I would like to invite you all to finish this sentence, just as an experiment. Try not to use the word "but".

"I like living in Malaysia because ... "

or

"I like being Malaysian because ... "

Update:

I feel inclined to conclude that Malaysians have a very peculiar relationship with food. It has a habit of appearing in almost any topic or discussion [see comment box below].

My turn to add my own (and since it's MY blog, I'm finishing the sentence and adding more!):

"I like being Malaysian because we grow gracefully as a nation. We are an experimentative nation that manages to maintain a civilised dialogue (by civilised I mean we don't kill each other over our ideologies) on things that have torn other nations apart.

While we all have our differing paths (UMNO, PAS, DAP, non-aligned, whatever it is), we have the same goal and loyalties - we all have Malaysia in our hearts and a fire in our bellies!"

Hmm. Maybe I can start things off:

I like living in Malaysia because it's the only place I know of that I can attend a Chinese New Year reunion dinner, a Malay tahlil and an Indian wedding for lunch all in the same week.

Oooh, my tummy ;)

i like living in malaysia because it is a peaceful country and it has so many races living together in harmony.

i like being malaysian because i'll be proud to announce to the world all races celebrate together with each other thier festivities! (and like ash said, get to eat!)

I like being Malaysian because I'm proud to have so many cultural beliefs, traditions, and rituals that make my life so much more colorful, not just my cultural beliefs, but those of others too. AMEN.

I like being Malaysian because I've always loved seeing Chinese eating sambal belacan, Indian eating gulai lemak cili padi and Malay eating capati!

Posted by: temi at 2004年03月09日 12:50

I like being Malaysian because I love the food, the people, the life and there is no place like home!

hmm everyone here is unanimous on the food!

I like living in Malaysia because of the:
- 24/7 availability of mamak food,
- Chinatown hawkers,
- serene kampung life (when I need to escape),
- merciless potholes never fixed,
- endless traffic jams, and
- evening torrential rains.

It is the only home I know.

I like being Malaysian because that is who I am and I'm damn proud of it.

I like living in Malaysia because it is where my heart is.

Posted by: Anuar at 2004年03月09日 14:45

i like living in malaysia because it's the only place i feel is "home".

Posted by: killuminati at 2004年03月09日 15:32

Oh my God! I think we've just discovered the next big election strategy. Feed the people!

[proposes the biggest mamak stall in the world!]

I love Malaysia sbb it's home :-) ..plus the makan2 ...oh my goodness !! .. available 24 - 7 :-)

Posted by: omecool20 at 2004年03月09日 17:15

This is an interesting post. I certainly hope that Najah dose not restrict it to merely the locals.

I tend to agree that for a nation, Malaysia has indeed made a name for itself, your industries, your produce are testament to this. We even buy your water.

As a foreigner in your country, I'd like to say that you guys have a beautiful country, it rich. The people, the food and certainly the culture. Grow graciously, and remember the basics of who you all are.

I've seen too many countries grow and the new "identities" they assume neglect who they were once before. That is just sad.

Posted by: TiFische at 2004年03月09日 17:18

Fische, are you referring to your own country? ;-) No lah, comment away - you kan part-time Malaysian...

It's always interesting to see what outsiders and observers have to say about our country, especially when we ourselves can't see past our shortcomings...

Posted by: Najah at 2004年03月09日 17:45

I like living in Malaysia because I never been to other countries and how was I suppose to know whether the grass is always greener on the other side.. or not.

Oops, spoil the mood pulak. :D

I like living in Malaysia because of the great weather (and the food of course). I love the sun. I am the child of Amon-Ra..

Posted by: Arni at 2004年03月09日 18:04

Can I please rephrase it so that it reads "I miss Malaysia because.." since I'm away?

Posted by: Idlan at 2004年03月09日 18:27

Najah: Fire in our bellies?

Er, I'd rather the food ;) Fire DOES hurt the digestion so.

Posted by: Ash.ox at 2004年03月09日 19:20

Considering the way we eat, I think the phrase 'fire in our bellies' describe the Malaysian tummy best! =P

Posted by: Najah at 2004年03月09日 21:04

Oh poop! Haha, literally.

Malaysia rocks lah, enough said.

Posted by: meesh at 2004年03月09日 23:28

I like living in Malaysia because eating is easy and the weather is warm and decent, allowing me to wear just one layer of clothing, and the girls are pretty darn hot too!

Posted by: faren at 2004年03月09日 23:36

I agree!
I like living in Malaysia because it is the ultimate gastronomic heaven.
I love living in Malaysia because that is where I left my heart, my family and my fondest memories. :)

Posted by: sweelin at 2004年03月10日 02:40

I like living in Malaysia because the weather doesn't hurt my lips the way US and France weather had, and all my family is here.

(my heart is shouting total agreement on the food)

Posted by: bayah at 2004年03月10日 06:38

hmm why i like living in malaysia?

Malaysian they fight, they scratch and they shout to each other on everything (esp politics).

Then, at the end of the day, they would lepak together in their favorite kedai mamak cracking jokes and gossiping Siti Nurhaliza...

must be the teh tarik, i guess...

Posted by: kaloynikovich at 2004年03月10日 10:02

saya anak malaysia.. saya anak malaysia.. and damn proud of being one! :)

Posted by: cakcibo at 2004年03月10日 11:16

I like living in Malaysia because of its demographic and gastronomic (sorry Najah, it's unavoidable) diversity.

I like being Malaysian because it's better than being Singaporean. >)

Posted by: Shryh at 2004年03月10日 12:18

Shryh ...

Better than being Singaporean you say. Hmmmm

Posted by: TiFische at 2004年03月10日 12:58

I like living in Malaysia because of its beautiful natural beauty, friendly people, peace and its the only place in the World where we can enjoy a teh tarik with friends at 1 am.

Posted by: Adam at 2004年03月10日 16:32

I guess I repeated myself in the previous post. I was refering to the natural scenic spots- especially the beautiful islands on the east coast.

Posted by: Adam at 2004年03月10日 16:37

Tifische: Well, that really is another topic for another day, but come on... how can anyone live in a country with bad ais kacang and worse wan tan mee? =)

Posted by: Shryh at 2004年03月10日 23:48

Shryh, another day it will be then. I tend to agree with the Ais kacang ... especially if you dont know where to go. I guess we make up with the Godiva Chocolate Cake though.

Posted by: TiFische at 2004年03月10日 23:54

Godiva Chocolate Cake!!!

*frown*

Why lah.. whyyyy lah...

Posted by: Najah at 2004年03月10日 23:55

I love malaysia.

I love malaysian politics because my brother is UMNO hardcore, my uncle is PAS seumur hidup, my cousin is KEADILAN, my indian neighbour is MIC, my chinese friend is MCA turn DAP. Oh yeea my neighbour at the corner end he is Singaporean but he sits with me in the residence's committee and when we have a meeting the favourite drink is TEH TARIK.

What else can I say ? I love Malaysia no matter what.

I like living in Malaysia because frankly, after a while the rest of the world couldn't compare to our food, our bad traffic, our colleagues( from all races - who you'd realize that after a while share the same Malaysia as you - nagging parents, mad aunties, absent siblings, bad feng tau, bad neighbours, nephews with doraemon obsession, frustrating teenage years), our bad local TV (Cit Cat? Melodi? Celebrity Square - never watch it voluntarily but always amusing), our Petronas ads - which I don't really like but entertaining nonetheless, our politicians keen on the dramatic, our unassuming family - "oh, takpelah, rezeki dia", the facts that most people outside Malaysia don't even realize that we've indeed, arrive.

Also I'd like people here to know that being a son to a very old fashioned Malay parents, not once have I heard them mentioning anything stereotypical about races. In fact, I never knew the "jokes" we all thought everyone knows until I went to college.

I like living in Malaysia because, the presevation of justice and liberty of thoughts, coupled with the freedom of speech that we embody has played us a melomatic tune, one that has given us the beautiful and joyous oppertunity to mature physically, mentally and culturally into a tolerant yet civilized society. The rich blend of cultural differences and background, somehow seem to provide the perfect potion to fuel our obsession towards the progression of our civilization, into a perfect balance of mind, body and soul .. did i miss out wealth?

Posted by: fade0 at 2004年03月12日 03:05

You said bad traffic, PK? Huh, have you been to Riyadh? I love Malaysia EVEN MORE because nothing makes you prouder as a Malaysia than being able to mix in harmony and being tolerant with people of all races and beliefs. I say this because of my experiences in the Middle East.

I like living in Malaysia because if I speak against the government, there is a good chance I will get to know who uncle ISA is. Eh I meant...err forget about it.
