Waiter! There's a Baby Cockroach in My Linguini!

...or "Doom: Part Deux"

This is the very reason why I need a blog. I forgive and forget too easily. Last Friday, after 'starving' myself for the whole day, Noreen and I headed for food after work.

Seeing that I finally got my Dome card (one lapse of judgment...) with coupons for freebies in tow, I suggested that we head there for afternoon tea/early dinner (second lapse of judgment). After agonising over the menu to see what we could order to redeem the freebies, we decided on the spicy olio pasta - Noreen had the spaghetti, I had the linguini.

Hers came first. She gulped it down within seconds. Mine came later, I took my time.

Three quarters way through the meal, I noticed something on the linguini on my fork. A baby cockroach was using my linguini as a highway.

I promptly raised my hand, quietly, to flag a waiter. I was told by Noreen to not make a scene, which I didn't. I merely pointed to the little thing that was still happily playing in my food. He called his manager, who offered me a replacement place, which I politely refused.

I didn't complain, I made a face. A "I want to throw-up all over your restaurant" face. The bill came, minus my meal. I didn't order the right stuff for freebies either.

Had I made a fuss, both of us could've gotten our meal free. But I was tired. I was hungry. I was just grateful that it wasn't a bigger cockroach. Or the family. Just the baby.

Jikon asked me to write to their GM. I can't be bothered. All they're going to do is offer me more free meals. At Dome. Who in their right mind would want to relive the experience? Give me something from Aigner or any of the Melium group brand products I say...

By the way, the pasta was a spicy olio one with beef bacon bits. Which meant that all those little crunchy stuff in my mouth could've been the beef bacon bits, or other things... like the baby cockroach's siblings.

I think I'll name it Ben. Ben, the baby cockroach in my linguini. Hope they gave him a good burial.

More Info:
Dome can be found in KLCC on the ground floor next to the park and on the 2nd floor, at the Jln Ampang wing of KLCC.

I used to work in F&B. Did you know that a pest-control friend once told me for every one cockroach you see in an eating establishment, there are 10 000 more that you DON'T?

I think the folks at your little eating place need exterminators and badly.

OK that's IT! If the GM reads my post, he better give me a handbag as compensation!!!

Well, at least you know you would have no problems taking part in Fear Factor. =p

Posted by: KaZ at 2004年02月26日 13:07

Dome is now offically in my black list. With their lousy service but posh pricing, it is just not worth it.

Posted by: pickyin at 2004年02月26日 13:10

Pickyin: It's been in my blacklist for three years straight. Gaaaaaah. Gimme TGI's any day.

Posted by: Ash.ox at 2004年02月26日 13:21

I say someone make a little DOME SUCKS icon and everyone post it on their blogs! There will be a revolution I tell ya!

Damn you dirty capitalist PIGS!!!

*runs off into a corner*

This post is an attempt at goog-tivism (thanks Ash for coining the phrase properly.. ).

Let's just see what happens.. muahahahah!!!

Good to see an Ash-ism in action.
Go go gadget go!

eep. I encountered a baby cockroach in my iced Milo a week or two ago at a food place in Cyberjaya. The guy didn't even give me my money back :-\ but offered a free drink (ugh).

Ever since I haven't gone back. I just can't. I'm kinda wary of F&B outlets as it is - cleanliness in the kitchen after hours isn't the best. So I stick food/drink that is prepackaged/bottled (not that's any safer but..)

sis najah, you are so brave...i would have puke there n then....n probably stay clear of linguini for a long long long time...but this goes to show, you'd make a great contestant for the Fear Factor programme ...dat is if they make you eat "stuff" among baby roaches....:)

I actually quite like Dome. The pastas are crap, but the cakes are quite good. I usually go for the nasi lemak and fish & chips, good stuff. Quite difficult to find good fish & chips in KL!

That's quite a gruesome find though Najah, but I like to think that us Malaysians have evolved an immunity to uncleanliness in food, having been exposed to stall food all our lives. What's a baby cockroach compared to a Bangsar cat-sized rat eh? :)

Posted by: red at 2004年02月26日 17:57

eek! cockcroach?? my most fear enemy? yeecch!! i would have throw up if i suddenly spot a roach in my food.

perhaps the best thing to do (short of throwing a big fuss) is to say it out loud and clear (so that everyone can hear it) - "there's a cockcroach in my food!".

oh mannnn.. this is bad. setinggi-tinggi dome di tempat (klcc), akhirnya baby lipas meronggeng ke pasta jua.

btw, i like your sweet reverse-revenge-psychology thingy.. eg- More Info: Dome can be found in KLCC.... hehehe

i leave you with a fitting tribute, sung by the baby michael jackson...

"Ben, you’re always running here and there
(here and there)
You feel you’re not wanted anywhere
(anywhere)
If you ever look behind
And don’t like what you find
There’s something you should know
You’ve got a place to go
(you’ve got a place to go)"

a DOME SUCKS icon sounds like a good idea... should make one for every money sucking, bad-tasting, crappy service restaurant? hehehe

i'm thinking about a McDs SUCKS icon now... and i have my reasons... aaaah

never ate at dome. never had the inclination to eat at dome.

chinos is another matter altogether. :)

Posted by: Wena at 2004年02月27日 20:24

Chinos: Nearly 70 bucks for a couple sandwiches with old salmon and a couple of ice lemon teas, oh and a coffee.

Yeah.

i remember the times when i was in school... the food was a constant nightmare for me - CR, cigarette butts, larvaes, etc etc.. i remember munching my way thru a drumstick when suddenly i sensed some unfamiliar texture in my mouth, and then my eyes confirmed it - hald an inch of a son of a fly damnit! went to complain to my seniors who were at that time the food commitee but oh they were so not amused and didnt give a hint of care.. seems to me that they were somehow used to this.. oh the joys and wonders of skool (bah)

Posted by: aidil at 2004年02月28日 10:11

Aidil,

I think you've hit on a good point. I was from a boarding school, where you hear of these things so often that you don't notice anymore.

Maybe THAT'S why I didn't puke on the spot!

Posted by: Najah at 2004年02月28日 17:03

Sweetie,
I shall get the c.e.o. to call u immediately, I promise. Mayb u can get dat chanel handbag spring summer collection '04?!

Posted by: vampytas at 2004年02月29日 22:37

btw, i was a sassian.. food was nice though on fridays and on 'makan istiadat's, oh, and I remember visiting ssp (i believe you were from there, Najah?) for an english debate session and got to sample some of the food from there - and it was delicious indeed.. well at least delicious when compared to sas' food. oh well..

thank God for boarding schools.. throw us grade c food and we'll chow down on it no problem (uh that is if there's nothing else to eat..)

Posted by: aidil at 2004年03月01日 05:58

oh, and does 'WAHI' ring a bell?

Posted by: aidil at 2004年03月01日 06:00

Aidil: I guess 'delicious' is relative. I always thought our food sucked - and end up paying for food at the cafeteria near the basketball court. Also, can't recall a 'WAHI'.

vamp: Any help is much appreciated. They're (Dome) really slacking off in the hygiene dept.

Posted by: Najah at 2004年03月01日 09:27

wahi is the brand for tea, coffe, cakes, 'milo', jam, 'planta', bread(hard crust) etc etc...which almost every other boarding school has..

my roomate was the waiter for one utamas dome and he was the one who made me realize that food/coffee which you paid for in bucketloads really isnt all that worth it since it costs next to nothing to prepare.. oh well, the unnesessary 'nesessaries' that we go for in life..

Posted by: aidil at 2004年03月01日 23:35

I heard somewhere that roaches are attracted to the smell of toothpaste. You weren't carrying one with you then were you?

Posted by: fundabonka at 2004年03月02日 16:15

Oh me God....selfish thought: lucky thing it wasn't me!!!

Another thought: I have found a baby cockroach in the mushroom soup of Mint Hotel..and the head waiter never bothered to throw away the soup tureen after we pointed it out. Yucks yucks yucks.

Posted by: Zsarina at 2004年03月02日 18:56

but really, a cockroach is great protein.
