I can't play chess - not because I don't know how to, in fact, I remember being asked to play for competition, when I was 8 or 9. I can't play chess because it takes too long (and don't suggest speed chess either, I hate being pressured to make a move).
I have a friend who has many sets in his house. I have another friend who wanted to spend almost 2000 bucks on a set. I have another friend who enjoys lifting near-lifesized pieces on a near-lifesized board (think Harry Porter in the 'Sorcerer's Stone').
No, chess is definitely not the game for me, unless someone is on standby to take over. Neither is Monopoly, unless it's the Powerpuff Girls set. I can play Scrabble, but not with overly competitive people (I recall 3 people who used to play this obsessively!).
I grew up playing board games - Life, Strawberry Shortcake's theme park game, those kind of things. I was obsessed with Caesar, Command & Conquer, Warcraft, Civilisation and the Sims. Long-term interest required, at my own pace.
I fully understand the mental and intellectual capacity it takes to play chess. I fully appreciate it. I hope that if and when I have kids someday, they love playing chess (instead of watching TV all the time).
Posted by Najah Nasseri at 2004年01月24日 19:28 | TrackBackI used to play chess with my brothers (until high school) and they can beat me in 4-5 steps. I really hate it (being beaten that is, and by a younger brother some more). My youngest brother is 7 years younger than I am. Huh!
But I managed to check mate a school player once. Probably by sheer luck. She's as surprised as I am. That is one of the best times in my life :)
Posted by: Sue at 2004年01月24日 22:09Scrabble is fun. but i admit it does get a bit
tight when everyone is so good. try Risk
for a good strategic games.
try 'Cash Flow'. Especialy if you are the kind who loves numbers and accountancy. a long game but fun because it is probably the closest game to reality. IMO haha
Posted by: natasha at 2004年01月25日 09:50nat - can u get Cash Flow in stores like Jusco? or do I need to go to Toy'r'Us?
Posted by: haniff at 2004年01月25日 20:53although i am fascinated with the game chess (who invented it btw?), i can never get to play the game well. i remember as a child when i used to play chess with my sister (who's older by me by 3 yrs.), i always lost.
i enjoyed playing board games as a child. i have blogged about it here. here. monopoly and scrabble were my 2 favourite games.
who can ever forget checkers and snake and ladders eh? i'm sure everybody plays it at one time or another.
Cash Flow 101 is a board game by Robert Kiyosaki, the author of Rich Dad Poor Dad, and from what I know it is not available in just any store. We found ours in an obscure store in Singapore, else we had to have it ordered from the states. It was USD$195. They say the latest version is better, because it takes into consideration inflation.
Oh well, guess we know how some people get rich huh.

play those games on your PDA, you can save them, play them on your LRT ride, then continue anytime you take a break, some good solutions to break into chunks those long term attention span, i suppose ...
it is so much fun especially when you beat the moves of the software ... scrabble on palm by Handmark is definitely the best. i recommend it.
or the best way to learn chess, "playing it cheat" ... i saw someone who was playing it on yahoo and copycat all the moves of the opponent on yahoo to the moves he entered on a game board he plays on another software, then copycat the second software moves onto the yahoo board, hheeh ... i thought it was nasty, but kinda fun.
have fun!
Posted by: haxa at 2004年01月26日 10:23I love chess. Devilishly good at it too. Played it on a life-sized set in Hyde Park, Sydney. The pressure of so many people watching! OOOOOO!!!!
Posted by: Aizuddin Danian at 2004年01月26日 11:51Many years ago I have always thought that people who play chess tend to be the boring and the nerdish type......until I met my husband. He plays chess to excercise his mind he says. I have played a couple of times with a friend who taught me the moves when I was 15. Then I decided , it takes too much of my time.I prefer reading. Now my eldest daughter (10yrs)is interested in the game and of course my hubby is excited about it. I will now have to refresh my non existent skill to support her newfound interest.
