Doom

Shima used to mispronounce 'Dome' all the time. It didn't matter though, because we haven't met there for coffee (or anything) for a long time.

Dome used to have the best breakfast in KLCC, until Chinoz decided to get in on the action in a big way. But I remember the Dome menu with a fondness of times gone by.

More out of convenience rather than the need to stroll down memory lane, three of us stepped into Dome after realising that we were too early for Chinoz. I've never been so disappointed.

The breakfast menu had shrunk but prices had gone up without including tea/coffee as a set. Since hash browns and grilled tomatoes were no longer on offer, I decided to try the eggs benedict. Let's just say that I needed ketchup to get through it. Thank God that the coffee was more than tolerable.

Service was bad, considering that it was breakfast and the staff should be fresh and perky (but then again, I've been pampered too much by those nice people at Chinoz). We quickly called for the bill, and on this matter, I have one more complaint.

One of the things they teach you in hospitality is never to hint that you want tips. This effectively means 1) don't give back too much loose change and 2) never hide the change behind receipts. The bill came up to RM54 for 3 people, when a more scrumptuous meal could have been had at Chinoz for about RM30. My change, an RM5 note, was well hidden behind the receipt, with the coins flying loose in the normal fashion.

Perhaps I'm being too fussy, but once you're used to something, you start noticing things that are different. It becomes easier to note what is best practice (i.e. what satisfies you most as a customer) and what isn't.

Taking too long to seat you is one thing. Taking too long to take your order is another. Making a face when you place your order is a big no-no, especially when all you're asking for is whether the restaurant has something. Water that tastes like chlorine is enough reason to not return.

How I wished I had waited the extra 15 minutes for those guys at Chinoz to finish mopping the floor...

[On a different note: Happy Chinese New Year! Drive safe...]

Not to mention at Dome, white people have gotten more precedence than poor brown little me a number of times.

Bloody hell. Just Doome.

lol...i used worked in one the hotel restaurants part time with a bunch of collegemates back in the early 90s. Usually we tried not to laugh while patrons were placing their orders...Some treated us like we are their servants (though in a sense, we are - but we're not in the 1940's anymore), some were speaking in English accents of quaint little Scottish towns while most of were around 18-19 yrs old and have yet to watch the complete Monthy Phyton shows. Some, were like Bridget Jones mother, you know - the-treat-lowly-waiters-nicely-and-the-won't-spit-in-your-glass-of-water types. But believe me, no one I know have peed in soup(?) ala Brad Pitt in Fight Club.
And these days I avoid those cafe type places like a plague because imo even if their food is great, you can be sure the staffs are either too tired to smile for the 3000000th times that day or some earlier customers have spoilt their mood rotten which make them more cranky than your usual mamak waiters. The beach-ish restaurant chains's staffs are the worst in my experience, rude, lazy and fans of The Eagles Unplugged judged on the repeat Hotel California over the speakers. Give me Kg Baru food (except that N.Lemak place) anytime.

just dropping by...
had so many bad experiences at dome and esp the one in KLCC. seriously think that they need to buck up on the service thingy.
so many waiters and yet, so lesser smiles.

i just feel its too expensive to have breakfast at either at dome or chinoz... but then, hey its just me... i'm the roadside mamak stall guy... i even find the new branded mamaks very expensive ;-p

Breakfast at La Bodega in Bangsar on weekends is a pretty good deal.

And if you feel like splurging, the PJ Hilton Coffee House has done a renovation. Looks very mod, decent spread too!

Tx for adding my link to yr site :-)

Dome, Chinoz .. whats the difference. Its all food for for the white people people anyhow. Unless ur white and have a whole load of money, may I sugguest food at mamak stall for just 1/10 of the price.

I'm amazed at Malaysian mentality of prefering white money than brown skins'.Nasty incident, when i was bringing my Aussie mates to a posh cafe in KL, dressed in cargos and t-shirt(selipar jepun lah!)only to be refused entry, as it's an exclusive dinery, where as my mates just waltzed in with his tattered jeans, Singha beer t-shirt and thongs. You'll see people going out their way to help an Angmo but would rather die than to lend a helping hand to Malaysians.

I concur with Haxa!

I have nothing against mamak stalls, just that sometimes, I prefer something different (and less stressful to my very sensitive tummy).

Anyway, I didn't expect ppl to not like Dome - it's always packed!

i got nothing against dome or chinoz or any other white-man's food place... i do eat there too hehe but what ixnay said is very true... in malaysia, white man wearing shorts can go through the airport security with no hassle but malaysian man in shorts will be not-so-politely refused entry.

Najah, although dome is packed most of the time, i know a lot of people who don't like their food... or don't go there because its expensive.

For the sensitive tummy, may I sugguest the Aseana cafe (been eating there for the last 2-3 years). Its a brilliant, affordable m'sian-sing cafe that serves good local and foreign dishes in the most delicate exotic menus. Dome/Chinoz is more for the wanna-bees whom love spending daddys money to look like the white people on 'friends', short of bleeching their skin white.

I actually enjoy food at Chinoz mainly because it's really good - will do a write-up on my fav dishes soon. Aseana is nice, but a bit bland and overpriced, especially for local dishes.

cant wait to start working and get enough money to have breakfast at white-people's restaurant. since i'm quite fair, i think they'll let me in with shorts. lol. unless petronas increase my allowance, i'll have to settle for mamak stalls for the time being. sigh.

Maybe it's just me... but if you want to spend money on something, food is the best way to go, books would be next.
I could spend a month or two contemplating whether to spend $100 on a new pair of shoes..or sheets. But I'd be one of the first ones in line when there's a new restaurant opening in my area ;)
My two cents.

Food at Aseana is yummy...but 6 teeny, weeny sticks of keropok lekor cost about RM6! But it's good keropok lekor though.

Oh dear. It's turned into a white people bashing joint since I brought it up eh?

But honest anak semenanjung, whoever told you Aseana cafe was affordable was lying. In fact, nothing on the Esplanade is affordable for most, unless of course you work in the building or go there for a once in a week thing....

But I think we all concur the food at Dome needs a revamp, except maybe the Spicy Olio which is really good. Could do with a bit more vege's but good.

:)

white people bashing eh... i think we must bash the malaysian mentality of worshipping white people. they never asked to be worshipped... well some do but most don't hehe but they're often shocked at the way malaysians treat them... like Gods sometimes... and most of my friends don't deserve it at all... cheh!

;-p

worshiping the white people Vs respecting visitors (remember asian tradition?)

Posted by: haniff at 2004年01月24日 05:54

i think there is a big difference between worshiping white people and respecting visitors... and i'm very sure our culture also teaches us to respect our fellow countrymen... if we only want to respect foreigners but show muka monyet to other locals, then no need fake tradition lah?

;-p
