Malaysians Behaving Badly

Sometimes I forget why I don't go out much.

In a show of support for a good friend who just opened a store (not hers, but she opened it), I ventured into the urban jungle that is One Utama 2 (or as another friend would call it, Two Utama).

During the usual 45 minute 'wait' to get into the complex, I was observing the crowd around us. The car in front was a cab, and just as I was looking that way, the door opened and a young girl let out a mucous-ridden lump of spit. Still gagging over the scene, another one soon followed.

The couple in the cab, not wanting to pay more in unnecessary cab fare, decided to walk the distance to the complex. The girl stepped out, and let out another spit ball, followed by the guy, who let out his own. This made me look carefully where I stepped. Having looked down, instead of up, when walking, I noticed that there were countless puddles of spit everywhere!

Later on in the car park, I noticed water dripping from the side of an Esteema. A woman was holding her toddler son while he was peeing onto the car park floor.

I related the incident to several friends, who went on to tell me their own. One friend saw a lady hold her child over a sink in a restaurant so that the baby can do the number 2. Another one say this happen in a hotel toilet, with a number 1.

Has the concept of hygiene and consideration for public amenities totally escaped us Malaysians?

Your blog brings back memories of my years living in Kota Kinabalu. It's a wonderful place, the people are friendly and it's also one of the few places left around Malaysia where the sputum expelled by the charming immigrants around the "Filipino Market" can rival some of the Bird's Nest we come to know and consume. *wink*

There was once I was with my colleagues at the food court at Mines and there was this woman washing her child (one can only assume why there was the need to change diapers in public) in the sink (and he peed in there too). This right in front of our table where we were having our lunch.

It's pretty disgusting to imagine urine in a sink - but hey, urile is a sterile solution (if it weren't, it'd be toxic to one's own body) - and is considered "cleaner" than spit. That said, it's no excuse for mothers to do such a thing with their kids. Public education on hygiene is needed desperately! :-\

Disgusting!!! Malaysians are generally unhygienic when it comes to things like this. And some mothers are just awful! To think when the kid grows up, he/she wl repeat the same gesture to their own kids. Pee-ing in the sink is ok, kids. I did dat when I was your age too. Did you know Msia has one of the worst toilets in the world? We're worse of than 3rd world countries. Refer to last 2 weekend's Star.

When you spit upon the ground, you spit upon yourself. For one day, you too will return to the ground (ashes).

Urinating in the sink is one thing, but as I mentioned in the post, a friend saw a mother hold up her toddler to poop in a sink - at a fast food joint!

sometimes parents need to go for potty training too perhaps.

Poop in the sink??? That's too much!(Jemi, u gotta stop imagining...had..to..sttoppppp...ewwwww) What's wrong with these people? I hope all of us would not turned into these kinds of parents/sickos.*sigh*

I can't imagine seeing anyone over here doing the same thing. I've seen people kick up a fuss when other people wash their feet in the sink at public toilets, never mind ridding themselves of bodily fluids and excrement.

Oh God, are we Malaysians that bad??!!

yuck! gross! i hate those who spit esp. when i'm having a meal. sorry to bring up race, but i feel it is mostly the old chinese apek who like to spit! malaysia should have a fine for those who spit in public.

Basically, people are selfish, and this comes out in their attitude...

It seems that the dark side of us humans rears its ugly head in the most simplistic yet disgusting way. Why has it become so open? Is it because society condones it? Or has just there been too lax a control?

It's disgusting but then again, M'sians are not alone. Where I am now, The Hague, NL you have to be real careful not to step on two things (i) spit and (ii) dog shit!!

Hmmm...I've encountered several incidents in the past, but to be frank, most of them are chinese mothers.Sorry, but it's true. Naj, 'Malaysians' sound so....errr, big, eliminate it.

If u think thats disgusting, u ought to visit remote India, where they just drop shite on public roads as they walk, in open public. Or in HK where spitting is considered a national pastime. Foorballers do it on field but women still queue up to Beckam's bedroom ...

Posted by: fade0 at 2004年01月13日 09:45

I wonder if these people do the same thing in their houses the way they do in public places?

"but women still queue up to Beckam's bedroom ..."
Maybe they're after his spits? But in defence of footballers, I think it's okay to spit on the field and sometimes you just have to. You'll understand if you play football.

kijal - we're damn lucky that we dont have as much dog shits as compared to european countries. Once in France, I think I managed to set a new record of how many times I've stepped on dog shits. Lol.

I'm getting bad vibes from this blog! :)

But that said, there can only be one solution to this problem - we just gotta go up to these people and give them a piece of mind. Or make citizen's arrest - whichever gets the message across.

Back in 1999, when I was on my way back to Muar, I took a bus, one chinese kiddo told his mum that he can't tahan anymore, the mother selamba asked the boy to pee wee terus dalam kotak minuman yeos teh bunga. Still haunted me till today.

another gross story to add.. Hey, theres an idea.. why dont we compile 'TRUE MALAYSIAN GROSS STORIES', seeing the success of 'True Singaporean Ghost Stories'... anywayz on with my story..

my uncle said that when he was small, my grandma would bring him to the cinema. and halfway thru he would want to pee, but my granma would be too engrossed with the story and asked him to pee there. so he did and he would see the pee stream down the theatre floor. now the best part was that they would sitting on the top floor of the cinema..!!! (u know those old school cinemas ala Rex and Odeon.) hehehe
and nowadays perasan tak, tak kisahlah TGV, GSC ke.. the cinema hall smells of pee... terrible man.. somebody create a mobile peewaterbottle.

ever heard of this saying? "bapak kencing berdiri, anak kencing berlari"

Posted by: believe at 2004年01月13日 17:46

know what? i've only seen chinese parents do this and not indian or malay parents.

Posted by: Wena at 2004年01月13日 21:54

i have. ppl of any race can be disgusting.

Posted by: pickyin at 2004年01月14日 07:10

i don't think we should associate this with any particular race. it happens everywhere. i've seen all races in malaysia involved in gross activities. somehow its because of our tadak apa-apa, biasa je attitude i think.

;-)
