Angels Part Deux

As I mentioned before, I had a big night out with the girls (Addie of Leo Burnett, Naliza who just got back from Qatar, Zarina who has recently taken up belly dancing and Yanti who now has a "low profile, but big influence" attachment) for dinner (@Chilli's where we ate a cow and several potato farms) and a movie.

Being in the company of such inspiring women made me think. When I was 23, I probably thought the world of myself. At 28, I seem to think the world of other people. Nonetheless, these women are not only the pinnacle of survival, looking at the world as it is now, they're the pinnacle of accomplishment. No, none are Datuks yet, although I don't doubt that some of the will make it there - as it is, one spent the afternoon rubbing elbows with the likes of the some of the richest and most influential people in Asia.

After dinner and coffee with the girls, the movie was a major turn of events. Charlie's Angels was wonderfully spoofy and shamelessly took advantage of the obvious sexuality of the dynamic trio. Carefully-placed camera shots of the three, with an added bonus of the evil Madison (played by sifu Demi Moore) was akin to a moving-picture Playboy - I'd recommend this movie if you really want to drool.

But this movie's appeal didn't just stop at the sexy-sensationalism or the MTV-hip cool factor. The fact that all the women were so obviously feminine, yet terrifying scary in their anti-gravity combat maneuvres, elevated them from the pretty minions of the man in hiding, to the new superhero trio, the grown-up version of the PowerPuff Girls (another favourite of mine). The last feminine superhero I recall was Wonder Woman, and she had virtually no clothes on - so the Angels (both movies) MUST be a big move upwards for fantasy feminism. ;)

[I would like to include Lara Croft and Xena, however, they didn't really strike me as superheros, rather women who were on personal missions rather than a quest to save the world. Tell me what you think.]

[Warning: All this superhero vibe can make you think you're invincible. Lucky that we all berpijak di bumi nyata - stepped back to earth - and remembered that midnight shows finish late and parking lots are deserted at this time of night. So all 5 of us dropped each other off all over the parking lot, with the exception of Addie, who went into 'self-defense pose' with her trusty handbag as she strode towards her car.]

Don't forget Trinity; she plays an equally big role in the Matrix movies. :)

Somehow my favourite woman in comic-dom is catwoman. It's that leather suit and that whip. Grrr

Interesting observations .... yet there is also unclear definitions of what constitutes a superhero. In most comics, not all possess "super powers". Batman relies on his techno gadgets, Daredevil relies on his acute senses, Captain America only had his shield. None of them have "special powers" ... gifts maybe.

I do agree, Catwoman looks ever so yummy, but as a woman with a personality complex, she is more the super villan when in her alter ego. Wonder Woman, as a descendent of the Amazons, has no personal special powers, her bracelet and lasso of truth among others are just tools. I'd say she is just like Batman.

Thus that leaves only Superman, Phoenix (Gene Gray - Xmen) and maybe the Silver Surfer I suppose.

But Fische... Superman and Silver Surfer are not women... ;)

Ah duly noted ... a tribute then to the women.

It takes a movie outing to be featured in your blog eh? Ah well, ain't complaining, though how come Addie is from LB and I am belly-dancer? :-)

I personally thought Charlie's Angels Full Throttle was too giddy, compared to the first installment but I totally enjoyed the John Cleese jokes (John Cleese was the big comedy man in Britain, in case you Aussie-educated folks aren't aware...he's the better example of gasp! actually funny! British humor)

See you tomorrow night at the stimulating (though a look at the line-up makes me hesitate to say "balanced") Leading Minds Seminar.

And - oh yeah - here's to another girls night out!
