Busting a Gut

Last night, I attended another PROMUDA Embassy Series event, at the Australian High Commission. It would be really shallow and rude of me to report that the highlight of the evening was the dinner, but I say this with no disrespect to the Australian High Commission.

As I expected, the event was superbly organised. Australians are known to be wonderful hosts. A good indicator of how the evening would progress: we were welcomed by Simon Merrifield, Counsellor of the Political and Economic Section - in fluent and eloquent Bahasa Malaysia.

The dinner was meticulously put together by an Australian chef attached at the Shangri-La. Everything about the dinner was Australian, from the Tasmanian salmon, to the pavlova - except for an interesting distraction - the soup tasted suspiciously like ox-tail soup, albeit a very light and pleasant one. Full menu to follow.

To make the entire evening more enjoyable, dinner was accompanied by live music from the MPO.

As we headed towards the Q&A session (after the pavlova, during the brie and figs), I thought to myself, this must a ploy to catch us off guard. Good thing was that the bust-a-gut dinner didn't deter outspoken PROMUDAns from asking H. E. Mr James Wise, Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia, about everything from human rights policies, to Australia's alignment with the US in its anti-terrorism policies to education and tourism.

Overall, the evening was organised in such a way that was distinctly Australian: from the cuisine, to the openness in embracing the ways of their guests (or in our case, their host country), to the frankness of discussion. Not to forget, in true Australian-style, free-flow of Australian wines, which I think some people enjoyed a bit too much. ;)

I have only one complaint on the evening - that they missed out one of the best things about Australian food: Tim Tams.

Tim Tam? I am in full agreement. But it must be made-in-Australia Tim Tam, and nothing less.

Delicious life.
