Navigating through the Mess

I am not cut out to be a project manager. After finishing 2 gruelling days of MS Project training (yes, we went all the way down to all those 4-letter acronyms), I realised that keeping track of other people's work is beyond my capabilities.
Firstly, we have to track schedule. That's fine. I can keep track of other people's schedule. Then we have to track cost. Not so hard. Then we have to track how much money we've lost (or made) as the project progresses.

Hmmm...

Then we have to start comparing against how much we should have made. Here's where the tools come in. Multiple that by 1000 line items. OK... getting lost. I know. Construction people go through thousands of lines of activities. Those guys at the plants who schedule 2-week shutdowns, who plans to the minute which valves to open, clean and close, who plan for parking and parking routes, probably have thousands for lines for a 2-week project. Imagine the folks at NASA. One launch is probably hundreds of thousands of lines of activities.

Me? I can't even plan my day properly. Target: To wake up on time. Prerequisities: Sleep by 11. Enforcement? None. So, I've been late several times this week. Several is a lot considering that there are only 5 working days in a week. So now I know how to properly use a tool to project manage. If only I can manage my time...
